Vehicle Infotainment and Head Unit FAQs

  • Updated

1. Is the RV LIFE Mobile App supported on Android Head Units?

Yes, the RV LIFE Mobile App is supported on Android Head Units running Android 11 or higher.

2. Why won’t my phone connect to the head unit or display RV LIFE on CarPlay/Android Auto?

If your phone does not connect to the head unit or the RV LIFE app does not appear on CarPlay or Android Auto, try the following:

  • Ensure your vehicle supports CarPlay or Android Auto and allows third-party apps.
  • Confirm that the RV LIFE app is installed and updated to the latest version. Ensure it was downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, not a third-party source.
  • Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, not a charge-only cable. Bluetooth connections may experience interruptions while navigating.
  • Check your phone’s CarPlay or Android Auto settings and confirm required permissions are enabled.
  • Restart your phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system if necessary.
  • Disconnect and reconnect your phone to re-establish the connection.

3. How do I use RV LIFE with CarPlay or Android Auto?

To use RV LIFE with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, first connect your phone to your vehicle's infotainment system. Once connected, you can use RV LIFE in either of these ways:

Option 1: Start navigation from the vehicle screen

  • Select the RV LIFE icon on your CarPlay or Android Auto screen.
  • When the RV LIFE map appears, tap the upper portion of the map.
  • Tap "Where To?" or "Destination Search." The wording may vary by vehicle and software version.
  • Select "Your Trips," "Recent," or search for a destination.
  • Choose the trip or destination you want to navigate.

Option 2: Start navigation from your phone

  • Open the RV LIFE mobile app on your phone.
  • Select your trip.
  • Tap "Begin Navigation."
  • The RV LIFE map and navigation appears on your infotainment screen.

4. Do I require a subscription to use the RV LIFE app on my head unit?

Yes, an RV LIFE Pro subscription is required for any CarPlay or Android Auto features.

5. RV LIFE doesn’t appear on my CarPlay/Android Auto screen. Why?

If the RV LIFE App does not appear on your screen, try these steps:

  • Confirm the app is installed and updated.
  • Check CarPlay/Android Auto settings on your phone.
  • Ensure your vehicle supports third-party apps.
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting your phone.

6. Why does my connection keep dropping during trips?

  • Use a reliable USB cable for wired connections.
  • Use a wired connection. Wireless signals inside an RV may be unreliable, causing sync issues or poor performance.
  • Disable battery optimization for the RV LIFE app if you are on Android.
  • Ensure your phone and vehicle software are updated.

7. Why can’t I hear the navigation prompts through my vehicle’s speakers?

Try these steps if you cannot hear the navigation prompts:

  • Check Audio Output Source
    - Disconnect from CarPlay or Android Auto (unplug your USB cable) and use the app directly on your device. You should hear “Let’s Go” when you tap “Navigate”.
    - Turn off Bluetooth to test. If connected to a headset or your vehicle’s speakers, the navigation voice may be routed away from your phone.
  • Verify Connection: Make sure you’re using a data-enabled USB port- some ports are charge-only. Try different ports if available. After connecting, select the RV LIFE app on your infotainment screen and confirm the map displays properly.
  • Adjust Audio Settings

- Look for “Navigation Voice Volume” or “Guidance Volume” in your infotainment settings.

- Increase volume using your vehicle’s controls while the navigation voice is speaking. This sets the navigation volume (unless using Android 15, which applies volume changes to all audio).

- Tap the screen during navigation and ensure the speaker icon is enabled.

- Check your steering wheel controls to confirm volume isn’t muted.

- Verify the correct audio source is selected (often labeled “Media”).

8. Can I use the RV LIFE app if my phone is connected via bluetooth?

Bluetooth alone does not support full map display on your vehicle’s screen. For full functionality, connect using USB or wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Bluetooth is only used for basic audio or phone features, not full navigation display.

9. Why does the RV LIFE app only show turn-by-turn directions on my phone and not the full moving map while driving?

When your phone is connected to your vehicle using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the RV LIFE app is designed to send the full map view and route guidance to your vehicle’s infotainment display.

On your phone screen, you'll only see basic turn-by-turn directions, similar to how apps like Google Maps or Waze function when connected to these systems. This setup helps reduce distractions by keeping navigation information on your main vehicle display.

If you’re looking at your vehicle’s default (OEM) screen and not seeing the RV LIFE map, it’s likely that you need to switch the screen to the CarPlay or Android Auto interface.

To see the full moving map while driving:

  • Switch your vehicle’s screen to the CarPlay or Android Auto interface.

If you prefer to use your phone screen for the map instead:

  • Turn off Bluetooth, or disconnect your phone from the USB port.

This will prevent the app from automatically switching to head unit mode, allowing the map to stay visible directly on your phone.

10. Why doesn’t pinch-to-zoom work on RV LIFE maps in CarPlay?

Pinch-to-zoom is not available on CarPlay.. To zoom in or out, tap the screen and use the zoom buttons provided. On Android Auto, pinch-to-zoom and touch scrolling are supported, depending on your vehicle’s head unit. This is a known platform limitation, not a vehicle-specific issue.

11. How do I connect Trip Wizard to Android Auto?

  • Open the RV LIFE mobile app on your phone
  • Select your trip and choose the specific leg you want to navigate
  • Tap Begin Navigation to start route guidance on your phone
  • Connect your phone to the vehicle with a USB cable

The route will transfer to your vehicle’s screen through CarPlay or Android Auto, displaying RV-safe navigation on your infotainment system

12. Why does my phone screen turn white or Android Auto disconnect when using Trip Wizard with RV LIFE?

A white screen usually indicates low available memory (RAM) on your phone. RV LIFE Mobile App, especially when running Trip Wizard with Android Auto, requires significant memory to function smoothly.

Recommended Tips:

  • We recommend devices with 6-8 GB of RAM for the best experience; 4 GB may be sufficient but can struggle during long trips
  • If your device has limited RAM, restart your phone before using RV LIFE — this frees up memory for the app.
  • Launch the RV LIFE Mobile App first, before opening other apps, to maximize available memory.
  • Extended use may cause your phone to get warm, which can also impact stability- taking short breaks or reducing background apps may help.
  • In most cases, restarting your phone resolves both the white screen and connectivity issues.

13. Why can I hear phone calls and music but navigation instructions are hard to hear?

  • Increase the volume using your vehicle’s volume knob or buttons while the voice is speaking
  • Many infotainment systems allow separate volume settings for navigation, media, phone calls, etc. Look for settings like “Navigation Voice Volume” or “Guidance Volume” in your infotainment sound and priority settings.

14. Why do I get a message telling me “When safe, review the terms of service on my phone?”

This message appears because you must accept the RV LIFE Terms of Service before the app can provide navigation through CarPlay or Android Auto. To proceed, check your phone for the “Trust, but Verify” screen and tap “Agree” to accept the Terms. The app will not send navigation instructions to your vehicle’s display until the Terms of Service are accepted.

15. Why do I get a message that “This task can’t be completed while driving?”

You see this message because Driving Mode is enabled for CarPlay or Android Auto. These systems restrict starting navigation while the vehicle is in motion and not in Park. To begin navigation, use your phone directly before driving.
